Balancing Humidity in Your San Antonio Home: It Is Doable

Achieving balanced humidity can greatly increase the comfort level and air quality in your home. Too much humidity, and an environment becomes conducive to mold growth and moisture damage. In addition, it’s just not comfortable. Too little humidity also makes for an uncomfortable environment, with accompanying static electricity, dry skin and nosebleeds. Ideally, relative humidity in a home should be somewhere between 30 and 60 percent.

When Humidity’s Far From Ideal

San Antonio has far more hot days than many other parts of the country, and air conditioners, by their very nature, remove a large amount of humidity from the air. But sometimes air conditioning alone can’t do the job. If this is the case in your home, you may need a dehumidifier, as well as an air conditioner. Although many homeowners opt for portable dehumidifiers, which they run in their basements, whole-house dehumidification is a more comprehensive solution. No part of your home will feel clammy or smell musty.

If your home is too dry during the short winters in this region, a similar approach can be taken with a humidifier. You can opt for a room humidifier–to use at night in your bedroom, for example–or a whole-house system.

Whole-house solutions–whether they add moisture or take it away–are incorporated in your HVAC system and are easy to maintain.

Your HVAC-System Expert

Consult your HVAC-system professional, who can recommend the remedy that’s right for your unique home. He might find that you don’t need a dehumidifier at all, but instead, you need a new air conditioner, because the one you have is approaching the end of the line. A new highly efficient air conditioner could solve your humidity problem.

If your HVAC professional does find that you need a dehumidifier or a humidifier, he could also advise that you swap out your thermostat for one of today’s state-of-art models that monitor humidity, along with the temperature. Smart programmable thermostats provide far more sophisticated information and can be accessed from a laptop or smart phone when you’re away from home.
