Home Cooling Tips Without Blasting Your A/C

With another hot, humid San Antonio summer on the way, the prospect of shock-inducing energy bills, overloaded power grids and killer heat waves poses a problem for southern Texas homeowners. If you crank up the air conditioner, you’ll simply burn through electricity and your household utility budget in no time.

If you rely on the efficiency of your cooling system and follow some home cooling tips, you can save on your annual utility bills while beating the heat. By making a few changes, you can keep the whole family cool while using nearly 50 percent less energy.

Long-Term Savings

  • If your air-conditioning unit is an older model, consider purchasing a new one rated for energy-efficiency. Look for the Energy Star and Energy Guide labels from the U.S. Department of Energy. Qualified air conditioning systems are up to 14 percent more efficient than older models. Always first consult your heating/cooling professional about inspecting or purchasing air conditioning equipment.
  • Consider installing ceiling, circulating fans or a whole-house fan in your home. All types move cooled air throughout the house while heated air rises toward the roof. Starting the fans during the coolest time of the day will help keep you cooler as the temperature rises.

Additional Home Cooling Tips

  • Use natural ventilation on cooler days and at night if the temperature drops to a comfortable level. Opening windows allows fresh air to circulate throughout the house,
  • Interior or exterior window shutters can be opened or closed to block sunlight while allowing air to enter the home. Medium-colored, tightly woven drapes lined in white will reflect direct sunlight and reduce heat by more than 30 percent.
  • Planting carefully positioned trees or tall shrubs can help save more than 20 percent of the energy used in a typical household. Treeless areas can be up to 6 percent warmer.
