Why Air Conditioner Service And Duct Cleaning Go Hand In Hand?

A duct work is part and parcel of your HVAC system. It is through the ducts that cooler and warm air from the central unit goes to the registers that give out air in various rooms. Unclean or leaky ducts can compromise the working of your HVAC.

Read on the following incident that happened with a homeowner named Jill Wrights in Ohio. Jill and her family members have been experiencing sudden bouts of allergies that were showing upon their skin off late. Even some of the family members were coughing too much lately. But reasons could not be traced. Then a friend of her recommended to get her ducts cleaned. Although quite sceptical about the results, Jill decided to go for it. She noticed two things after the ducts were cleaned-the air quality improved, the entire HVAC system worked more efficiently.

The HVAC is a complex system and has many factors that contribute to its smooth functioning. One of these is clean ducts. Ducts infested with dust and debris will restrict airflow through them. This can cause the machine to work harder and longer to bring the desired output. Leaky ducts are fertile ground for active mold growth. These mold spores can get inside the house and cause allergic reactions among people living in the house. Although these is no scientific evidence that clean ducts improve the efficiency of HVAC or improve air quality but there is nothing wrong in getting it done . Let’s take look as to how to tuning up a HAVC and cleaning the ducts go hand in hand.

• Everyday a commendable percentage of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust, mold spores and chemicals enter the house. These particles are sucked by the HVAC but are again recirculated 5 to 7 times per day, on an average with the cool air that it supplies. These contaminants stick to the surface of the ducts and builds up there. They gradually loosen them from the duct surface and reach the living space. They are inhaled with room air and causes serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune disorders or some environmental allergies. As a result it is important to clean your ducts at least once in twice in five years, just like you do an annual maintenance of HVAC.

• When the ducts are infested with dirt, the flow of air through them gets restricted. As a result the cooling levels go down. The ducts also develop leaks over time. The joints get loosened. This leads to leakage of the warm or cool air those issues from the central unit.

• The dust and debris in the ducts make the heating and cooling system to work harder and therefore cause greater wear and tear of its parts. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted.
